Transitional kindergarten and kindergarten, in the same room with the same teacher

The first years of school set a child's idea of what school is. At Reformation those years happen in one bright classroom with Mrs. Buth, where a transitional kindergartner this year is a kindergartner she already knows next year.

What the TK and K year includes

  • Reading readiness, phonics, penmanship, and the first steps in writing
  • Math facts and early math taught at each child's level
  • Bible stories, memory work, songs, and a weekly chapel service with the whole school
  • Spanish, music, art, and physical education, taught by the same specialists the older grades have
  • Drama performances and field trips that include the youngest students
  • A full school day, 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with Shepherd's Care from 7:00 a.m. and until 5:30 p.m.

Why families choose Reformation's TK when public TK is free

San Diego Unified offers transitional kindergarten at no cost, and for some families that's the right choice. Families who choose Reformation instead usually tell us one of four things.

  1. They want faith in the room. Devotions, Bible stories, and chapel are part of every day here, not an after-school add-on.
  2. They want the same teacher for two years. TK and kindergarten share Mrs. Buth, so the kindergarten year starts with a teacher who already knows the child.
  3. They want one campus through 8th grade. A child can move from our preschool to TK to kindergarten and all the way through middle school without changing schools, teachers' expectations, or friends.
  4. They need the day to fit a work schedule. Shepherd's Care covers 7:00 to 8:15 a.m. and 3:15 to 5:30 p.m., billed only for the hours used.

Tuition for TK is the same as for every other grade, $9,500 for the 2026-2027 school year, with sibling and member scholarships and need-based assistance available. Details are on the tuition page.

Is TK or kindergarten right for my child?

Placement depends on your child's age and readiness, and we'd rather talk it through than hand you a cutoff date. Mrs. Rodrigues will walk you through it on your tour, and Mrs. Buth meets each new student before they start.

Coming from our preschool

Reformation's year-round preschool serves children from two and a half to five on the same campus. Preschoolers already know the building, the chapel, and many of the older students who greet them in the morning, so the move to TK is a short walk rather than a new school. About the preschool.

Questions parents of young children ask

What are the school hours for TK and kindergarten?

The same as the rest of the school: 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Shepherd's Care is open from 7:00 to 8:15 a.m. and from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. at $7.25 per hour.

Do TK students wear uniforms?

Yes. All students in TK through 8th grade wear school uniform clothing according to the dress code in the school handbook. A gently used uniform store on campus helps families get started.

Can my child enroll in the middle of the year?

Yes, when there's space in the room. Midyear enrollment is common at Reformation, and tuition is prorated for families who start partway through the year.

Is hot lunch available for the youngest students?

Yes. Hot lunch is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays to all students, preschool through 8th grade, and billed through FACTS.
