For Lutheran families looking for a Lutheran school in San Diego

If your family is Lutheran and you want a school where the catechism is taught by a pastor, where chapel is in a sanctuary rather than a gym, and where the teachers confess the same faith you do, Reformation is five miles from Pacific Beach and has been doing exactly this since 1970.

What a WELS school means here

Reformation Lutheran School is operated by Reformation Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, and it's accredited by WELSSA, the synod's school accreditation body. Every classroom teacher is WELS certified. Pastor Werner teaches the chief parts of Christian doctrine to the seventh and eighth graders, leads the weekly chapel service, and is part of the school day rather than a visitor to it. Students learn Bible history, the catechism, and memory work in every grade, and the school sings in the congregation's worship services through the year.

If your Lutheran school has closed or changed

Lutheran schools in San Diego County have had a hard few years, and more than one family has come to us after their school suspended a grade or closed its doors. We'd rather say this plainly than make you ask: we have room, we enroll midyear, and we'll make the move as easy as we can. Your child will join a classroom with a teacher who keeps students for two or three years, and the tuition, $9,500 for 2026-2027, will likely be close to what you were already paying.

If several families from the same congregation are looking at once, Mrs. Rodrigues will happily host a group visit on a school day. Call (858) 279-3311 or email principal@refsd.org.

For members of Reformation and other WELS congregations

  • Members of Reformation Lutheran Church receive a 15% tuition scholarship.
  • Families from other WELS and ELS congregations are welcome and will find the same hymns, the same catechism, and the same confession in the classroom.
  • Eighth graders can continue to California Lutheran Academy, our affiliated WELS high school, and many do.
  • Fine Arts, Forensics, Knowledge Bowl, track meets, and Soccer Day bring our students together with other WELS schools in Southern California several times a year.

Where families come from

Our families live in Clairemont, Bay Park, Linda Vista, Pacific Beach, University City, Kearny Mesa, Mission Valley, and beyond. The campus is at 4670 Mt. Abernathy Avenue, just off Balboa Avenue, and Shepherd's Care from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. makes a longer commute workable.

Not Lutheran? Still welcome

Most of what's on this page applies to every family. Families don't need to be Lutheran, or members of any congregation, to enroll. We only ask that they support the school's Christian character and that students take part in devotions, chapel, and religion class. What we believe says it in full.
